AAP Faces Fresh Turmoil as Akali Dal Leader Predicts More MP Exits
Aam Aadmi Party faces growing instability as Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia claims two more MPs may defect. With recent exits and internal splits, the party’s parliamentary strength could shrink further, intensifying political uncertainty in Punjab and beyond.
In an online post, Majithia claimed that two more parliamentarians from the party are likely to exit soon, citing undisclosed sources. “Another day, another departure loading... Sources indicate two Lok Sabha MPs may soon be flying out of Aam Aadmi Party. The ‘frequent flier’ list just keeps growing,” he wrote, while tagging the party, Kejriwal, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The Aam Aadmi Party has not yet issued an official response to these allegations.
At present, the party holds three seats in the Lok Sabha, all from Punjab. Under India’s anti-defection law, legislators can break away and merge with another party without disqualification if they constitute at least two-thirds of the party’s total strength in the House. If Majithia’s claim materialises, the two MPs would meet this threshold, enabling them to defect without losing their parliamentary membership.
Such a development would further reduce the party’s representation to four Members of Parliament overall, including three in the Rajya Sabha and just one in the Lok Sabha. The party has already suffered a major split following the recent departure of young parliamentarian Raghav Chadha, who reportedly broke away from its ranks along with two-thirds of its Rajya Sabha strength.
Justifying his decision, Chadha accused the party of being “corrupt and compromised.” The Aam Aadmi Party, however, described his move as a “betrayal,” noting that he had been elevated first to the position of a Member of the Legislative Assembly and later to Parliament.
The unfolding developments signal a period of intense political instability for the Aam Aadmi Party, raising questions about its organisational cohesion and future electoral strength in Punjab and at the national level.
